Mad Monkey Hostel Koh Rong Island | Travel*

Mad monkey hostel Koh Rong

If I was told that I had to go somewhere that has no wifi or phone signal I would say HELL NO! However, when you add in that it is a pirate island with beautifully sea view bungalows it's a little harder to resist. The thought of no contact with the outside world scared me a lot but I decided to go along to experience it anyway, and I'm pretty glad I did.

We made our way to the Sihanoukville pier and took the speed boat to Koh Rong island ($20 each return ticket) It took around 45 minutes until we arrived on the island once there we were approached by taxi drivers as always however this time the taxi was a boat, We agreed to pay $0 between 3 of us to take us to the Mad Monkey resort. We had to walk through the sea to get in to the boat and climbed in with our heavy backpacks. It took a further 15 minutes for us to arrive. I was soaked by the time we get there so I was impressed ( 2 days after my denim shorts are still wet) we made our way from the beach to the main bar / restaurant / reception area.

Checking in was a little slow compared to usual and I soon realised there was a very chilled laid back vibe. I am not use to that at all and was getting antsy wanting to get out of my wet shorts, dump our bags and have one lunch ! We finally got checked in to our own private bungalow that faced the sea :) it was very basic with no electricity sockets, small fans, a main light and two double beds that have a mosquito net covering each. The bungalow was fairly big and suited us well :). There was a main shower bloc area that was shared which was nice and clean and pretty close to the bungalows and the shared cabin.

Once getting sorted we headed back to the bar and ordered some sweet potato fries to kill the hunger until tea time. There was plenty of choice at the restaurant and something for every dietary requirement :). By this point we where desperate to lounge in the hammocks in the sea and play on the sea swing. The sea was only knee deep so it was pretty nice to just lie in the hammocks. We met up with friends that we met in previous hostels so just chatted in the sea for the afternoon.

We all went back to shower and change then headed back to the bar area for food !! I had the seafood curry which was lovely. We spent the evening playing games, drinking and chatting to different people. Around 11:30 the closed and most people went for a swim in the sea among the plankton however we where pretty sleepy so we went off bed. I had a fairly good nights sleep and was woken by the light coming in to the bungalow.

We went for breakfast around 10:30 I had the All American breakfast which consisted of pancakes, bacon, an egg and a hash brown. It was okay but not amazing. I then went off to chill out in the sea, laid on the hammocks. I pretty much spent most of my time in the sea or in the bar. I had a mango, chicken and cashew salad for lunch which was lovely. After I went for a shower, got changed and had a nap until 7pm. It was so nice to not have a care in the world, just doing everything at your own pace. We went to the bar and had the BBQ for our dinner. Again this meal was okay but not amazing. The food was hit and miss but there was a really good selection.

After eating we got involved in the drinking games once more one being beer cricket. This was in 4 team of 10/11 each with a beer to drink or in my case a vodka lemonade in a can ! The teams took it in turn to throw a ball at a water ball in the middle of the room and if it was knocked over your tea could start downing their drink until the other team retrieved the ball and stood the bottle up. The team who won would be the ones who downed their drinks first. It was great fun and I managed to get pretty drunk from drinking so quickly. I ended up in the sea the second night which again was great fun. If you 'swished' your arms around in the sea you could see the sparkly plankton which was so pretty.

We had to get up pretty early to catch the boat back to the main land, again check out was a little slow but all part of the laid back atmosphere.

I had a really good two days at the Mad Monkey Koh Rong Samloem and I would recommend it to fellow travellers - especially if you are more of the laid back type. Thank you so much for having me, I hope I can come again one day !
